Dao, Jean-claude; Gerard, Andre; Buestel, Dominique.
Research on the black scallop followed that on the king scallop. Indeed, over the 1973-1975 " spadework » period, it has been demonstrated that the roadsted of Brest was: - an overexploited king scallop deposit; the broodstock not being able to ensure a satisfying renewal of the species. - a black scallop production deposit (hundreds of tonnes). In parallel, the collection trials provided null results for the king scallop but very interesting results for the black scallop (thousands of spats per collector). From 1976 onwards, the spat collecting operations did not focus on king scallop juveniles anymore, but on black scallop.

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Dao, Jean-claude; Mikolajunas, John-paul; Minchin, Daniel; Norman, Mark; Strand, Oivind.
Faced with the decline of scallop {Pecten maximus) fisheries and high costs of ongrowing in suspension, scallop seabed cultivation appeared to be the most suitable technique for European conditions. A three-year European Concerted Action supported by European Union and Norway (associated country) joined together four teams involved in scallop seedings : - IFREMER Brest / laboratory Molluscs, in Brittany (France), a national institute of ocean research (co-ordinator of the Concerted Action) ; - Connemara Shellfish Co-op, in Connemara, County of Galway (Ireland), a fishermen's co-operative ; - Seafish Ardtoe, in Scotland (United Kingdom), an institute provided by the fishing industry ; - Institute of Marine Research, in Bergen (Norway), a national institute...

Buestel, Dominique; Dao, Jean-claude.
Two main conditions are necessary for the extensive culture of king scallop: 1.The getting of spats, 2.A good survival rate for these spats in their natural environment. These two criteria enable the definition of the technical standards giving way to an economic analysis. Until now, the only solution to a juvenile production is their collection in their natural environment, on high adult density deposits. At the time being, out of all the French deposits, that of Saint-Brieuc is the only one answering this characteristic. However, even in this case, spat collection has not yet reached the necessary reliability. Indeed, the amount of spat collected for a year will rely on two main factors: 1.The state of the brood stock, 2.The climatic conditions.

ArchiMer
Dao, Jean-claude; Caisey, Xavier.
Since 1973, spat collection bas been conducted by IFREMER in the bay of Brest. This collection aimed at providing juveniles of Pecten maximus (1973-77) and then Chlamys varia(1977-87) in order to improve the management of the fishing grounds of the two species. Since 1982, the efforts have been focussed on the P. maximus spat production through the hatchery/nursery systems and the intermediate culture. Juveniles are seeded above a minimum size to create an additional population. In parallel, the levels of spat yied/collector have been followed as a pre-recruit index. At present time, there is no increase of spat collection during 1985-1990. Moreover, the results rise up the question of water quality in the bay of Brest for this group apparently very...

Buestel, Dominique; Dao, Jean-claude; Lemarie, Gilles.
Since 1973 some pectinides spat collection experiments have been conducted by the Fishery team of the Brittany Oceanology Centre, on two deposits exploited by commercial fishing: the roadsted of Brest and especially the St-Brieuc Bay The experiment carried out in 1973 was the first French attempt on this group of species and the results have been very encouraging: although the technology used was rudimentary, the best collectors enabled the collection of 30 to 50 king scallops (Pecten maximus) each and of 6,000 to 8,000 scallops (Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularis). The research protocol used enabled the determination of the sequential aspect of the fixation, and of the growth speed of the young animals. In addition, the difference between both deposits...

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Dao, Jean-claude.
The scallop is a filtering mollusc that feeds predominantly on phytoplankton. It lives on loose beds of maerl, sand or mud, most often between 5 and 40 metres deep. The scallop likes cool (7° to 20°C) and well oxygenated ocean waters. It does not tolerate desalination or emersion out of water. In France, there are two very closely related species: Pecten maximus in the English Channel and the Atlantic and Pecten jacobaeus in the Mediterranean. These are frequent species in French coastal waters. But the many deposits, considerably exploited, have rather thinned out over the last 20 or 30 years.

This document is made from reports of a working group joining together JFREMER biologists and economics to shape an economic evaluation of scallop Pecten maximus aquaculture. It lays out the synthesis of al1 available data on french scallop fisheries and market and takes stock of the farming technical results. The study also approaches the difficulties to implement this farming techniques and the problems linked with the development of a new aquacultural activity. This work contributes to determine the right research fields to cany out, to identify the projects which will be submitted to an economic analysis and to define the measures to take in order to allow an efficient technical transfer as well as a good sectorial survey

Buestel, Dominique; Dao, Jean-claude; Gohin, Francis.
The efficiency of the fishing drags in the Saint Brieuc Bay, Brittany, has been determined through the analysis of the tracks left on the seabed. The results, which focus mostly on the age class n°2 (2.5 years), show that the efficiency and the damages caused by the drags vary heavily according to the nature of the seabed. For soft bottoms, the average efficiency is 67 % and the global damage is 2 %. Concerning hard bottoms, the values are respectively 30 % and 17 %. These efficiency results combined with those of a dragging expedition in a set sector of the Saint-Brieuc Bay enable a direct assessment of the abundance. A result treatment method deriving from the geostatistical theory is used: it takes into account the spatial structure of the king scallop...

Buestel, Dominique; Dao, Jean-claude; Gohin, Francis.
The efficiency of the scallop dredge used in baie de St Brieuc (Britany) has been directly determined by divers swimming along the track marks left on the bottom. Results, concerning essentially year class two, show that efficiency and damage caused by the dredge on scallops are highly variable according to nature of the sea bed. On smooth grounds, the average efficiency is 67% and the average percentage for severely damged scallops is 2% ; on rough grounds, theses percentages are respectively 30% and 17%. These results associated with a dredge survey on a particular area of the baie de St Brieuc allow an assessment of scallops abundance. The statistical method used, relevant to the geostatistic theory, takes into account the scallop spatial distribution...

Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Carval, Jean-pierre; Muzellec, Marie-louise; Gerard, Andre; Barret, Jean; Cochard, Jean-claude; Dao, Jean-claude.

The article is an excerpt from a focus document for understand scallop aquafarming's position. Studies on this species are part of IFREMER/DRV research programmes as an aquafarming as well as a halieutic resource. They are currently becoming reality through significant support for fishing management but also through experiments of semis of juveniles at various English Channel and Atlantic sites, to cite only the most applied operations. Fishing and shellfish farming professionals are closely associated with this programme. Scallop fishing occupies a prominent position this year in the press by reason of fishing and marketing problems due to intake being much higher than in past years. The situation matches the forecasts of IFREMER teams that have been...

Laurec, A; Bard, François-xavier; Dao, Jean-claude; Branellec, Jean.
Since 1967, albacore fishermen have been involved in the studies on fishery, recording their observations in fishing logbooks. This work is conducted under the authority of the Interprofessional tuna committee and studies have been carried out from 1967 to 1969 driven by the late professor Postel, and then taken over in 1969 by the CNEXO. The fishery is exploited mainly by a fleet of 300 French tuna boats and 1 000 Spanish tuna boats using mobile lines and living bait. It occurs over the summer season, from June in an area comprised between the Gibraltar straight and the Azores Islands until the end of September along the Franco-Irish continental shelf.

Aquaculture production of scallop has been identified by a series of technical operations during the past ten years programme under a partnership involving the fishermen organizations with regional and national grants. 3 million juveniles have been produced annually, giving a potential recapture by fishing of 100 to 120 tonnes 3 years later. Results in terms of technical and economical approach have pointed out the principal unknown factors responsable for high costs. 7he pilot programme aims to increase the production to reach a level of 5 million juveniles to support the fishery of the rade de Brest and induce new management of the resources. Two priorities were selected, control of the reproduction in the hatchery to obtain reliable larval and...

Buestel, Dominique; Arzel, Pierre; Cornillet, Paulette; Dao, Jean-claude.
It is attempted to produce large quantities of 25 mm scallop juveniles suitable for restocking the beds. A first breeding experiment in laboratory gave a very low survival rate : about 1% from the D larvae stage to reach the size of 1 mm. The growth after metamorphosis is very irregular and slow, compared to the datas obtained in natural environment. An experimental programme of spat collection in natural environment, completed by hanging culture has been conducted. An average number of 300 spats (size 15 mm) per collector has been obtained in 1976. Banging culture allows to reach the size of 25 mm three months after settlement with a very good survival rate. The yield of a large number of spat from collectors seems to demonstrate that there is a future...

Dao, Jean-claude; Buestel, Dominique; Gerard, Andre; Halary, C.; Cochard, Jean-claude.
The king scallop (Pecten maximus L.) has been the object of some in-depth studies since 1973 with the double aim of natural resources management and extensive aquaculture in mind. The results obtained during the first ten years enabled the launch of a pluri-annual 1983-1987 program which aims to demonstrate the re-populating of the roadsted of Brest and the introduction of new management methods in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc. The technical results of the resource management and of the aquaculture operations are described. They enabled the stabilisation of the annual production of the Saint-Brieuc deposit as well as to foresee a new biomass of 80-100 tonnes of spawners per year in the roadsted of Brest. However, the implementation of all these developments is...
